Abstract

This research examined about the key words, the goal, the desirable figure of democratic citizen of the new economic education curriculum and the contents which should be reflected in the new economic education curriculum in terms of the sustainable development of Korea’s economy. For this purpose, it established the one system composed of three categories of economy, society and environment, 13 areas, 32 sub-areas and 54 indicators and analyzed the progress using the data of the National Statistical Office and the Bank of Korea. As a result, it is found that Korea’s economy is on the verge of collapsing even the least sustainable development power as ‘the industrial development mainly performed by export large companies’. The direct cause of this crisis is definitely on the failure of economic policy rather than economic education curriculum, but in the new economic education curriculum, the serious deliberation about this problem should be reflected. Firstly, the concept of Homo Economicus with private profit pursuit which was the most desirable human model for the existing economic education curriculum needs to be newly interpreted and applied in terms of ‘integration’, ‘safety’ and ‘creation’. Secondly, the goal of the new economic education curriculum should be set as the development of a ‘critical’ democratic citizen, or ‘healthy’ democratic citizen. Thirdly, The main content systems which should be reflected in the new economic education curriculum through chapter Ⅲ analysis are the promotion of domestic industries, the consideration for the socioeconomic weak, and the environmental preservation. And the main content factors are the economic necessity of unified Korean economy to overcome the ‘half economy’, economic ethics(business ethics), the theory of income distribution, social enterprise, cooperative, the role and status of agriculture, small businesses and service industry, the certain restrictions on the uncontrolled development of domestic or foreign large investment (and when it is related to general people, it applies negative regulation) and the job creation with high quality. In conclusion, Korean economic situation which was exactly reviewed in terms of the sustainable development must be reflected in the new economic education curriculum.
