동양의 인식논리와 21세기 문명

본 논문에서는 동서양 사상에서의 우주자연 혹은 세계에 대한 인식논리의 특징을 개관하고, 그것이 현대 과학기술 문명에서 나타나는 문제들을 성찰하고 해결하는데 어떤 시사점을 제공하는지를 알아본다. 서양 사상은 주로 데카르트, 뉴턴 등이 체계화한 근대 합리주의 전통을 지칭한다. 동양 사상은 주로 중국의 유가 및 도가 사상, 인도의 Upanishad 철학이나 불교사상, 한국의 ‘한’ 사상으로 제한한다. 그리고 각 사상의 고유한 인식논리와 그 특징을 각각 서양의 ‘형식’ 논리와 이분법적 구분, 중국의 ‘음양’ 논리와 유기적 조화, 인도의 ‘공’ 논리와 무규정, 한국의 ‘한’ 논리와 포용으로 규정한다. 다음으로, 현대 과학기술 문명을 효과적으로 발전시키는 한편, 거기에서 파생되는 자연적 환경에서의 오염과 파괴, 사회적 환경에서의 갈등과 대립 문제 등을 해결하기 위한 인식론적 과제로서 동서양 인식론의 조화를 제시한다. 21세기에는 과학기술이 더욱 발달함과 동시에 그에 따른 환경오염이나 사회적 복합성도 더욱 증폭될 것으로 전망된다. 우리 시대에 주어진 당면 과제는 과학기술의 발전에 따른 부작용을 최소화하면서 문명을 존속시키는 것이다. 이를 위해서는 무엇보다도 자연적 환경, 사회적 환경, 정신적 환경 간의 상호 관계와 작용이 지니는 중요성을 인식하는 것이 요구된다. 우주자연, 세계, 사회, 사물 등에 대한 인식, 도덕적 및 윤리적 의식, 가치관이나 신념은 기본적으로 정신적 환경에 속한다. 우주자연관, 세계관, 사회관 등은 자연적 환경이나 사회적 환경과의 관계를 어떻게 인식하고 해석하는가에 따라 달라진다. 문명의 진보 및 거기에 내재하는 위기 상황에 관한 성찰, 그리고 그것을 완화시킬 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것은 일차적으로 정신적 환경, 특히 인식론적 관점에서부터 출발해야 한다. 오늘날 현대 과학기술 문명이 직면한 자연적, 사회적 환경에서의 위기 상황을 고려한다면, 동서양 사상에서의 인식론의 장단점을 서로 조화시키려는 자세가 요청된다. 과학적이고 분석적인 서양의 인식논리를 통해 과학기술을 더욱 발전시키면서, 유기적이고 전체적인 동양의 인식논리를 통해 자연환경을 대하고, 사회적 갈등과 분열을 치유할 때 비로소 21세기 문명은 존속가능하리라 생각한다. 동서양의 보완적인 인식론을 만들어 가는 과제는 우리 모두의 몫이라고 제안한다.
Abstract
Eastern Epistemology and the 21st Century CivilizationThe purpose of this paper is as follows : firstly to study the eastern-western epistemology about the universe, nature and world; secondly to apply them to reflect the comtemporary problems in our civilization characterized by science and technology. As the western thoughts, I treat with the rationalistic traditions which Descartes and Newton systematized. And I restrict eastern thoughts to Chinese, Indian, and Korean traditional thoughts. I name and define the characteristics of epistemology respectively as follows : Western formal logic is dichotomy; Chinese yin-yang logic is organic harmony; Indian empty logic is not-define; Korean han logic is comprehensive. I get to conclusion that we need to compliment the eastern and western epistemology in order to cope with the critical moments that our civilization is confronted with natural and social environment. That is to say, we should advance the science and technology through western epistemology which is scientific, analytic. We should preserve natural environment, and cure social conflicts through eastern epistemology which is organic and holistic. I think the complimentary epistemology will be helpful to conserve the 21st century civilization healthfully.
