불교의 무아ㆍ연기 사상에 비추어 본 다문화주의

특정 집단의 문화의 고유성을 주장하되, 그 고유성이 ‘불변적 실체’로서 생명력을 갖는 것으로 상정될 때, 다문화주의는 필연적으로 다문화주의를 가장한 분리주의로 치달을 가능성이 농후하고, 이것은 ‘모든 것은 불변적 실체를 갖지 않는다’는 불교의 무아사상에 비추어볼 때 온당하지 않다. 일시적으로는 견고하고 불변적인 것처럼 보이지만 긴 시간을 염두에 둘 때 ‘불변적 실체’는 존재하지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘불변적 실체’가 있다고 믿게 되고 그것에 집착하게 되는 것은 우리의 사유가 빚어낸 조작의 놀음에 기인하는 것에 지나지 않는다. 그러므로 ‘불변적 실체’를 상정하는 그런 류의 동화주의나 다문화주의는 존재론적 사실에 입각한 주장이라고 할 수 없다. 문화 혹은 정체성은 실체로서 존재하는 것이 아니기 때문에 다른 문화들과 더불어 상호의존적으로 존재한다고 보아야 할 것이다. 무실체이기 때문에 상호의존적이다. 거꾸로 상호의존적이기 때문에 무실체적이다. 문화들은 고립적으로 폐쇄적으로 존재하지 않고 상호영향을 주고받으면서 자기의 모습들을 지속적으로 변형시켜나가는 것으로 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 문화는 본성상 다문화적일 수밖에 없다. 다문화가 공존하는 것이 존재론적으로도, 가치론적으로도 옳다. 개인들은 문화 속에 존재하고 또 그 문화를 만들어가는 것으로 보아야 하겠지만, 차별과 억압을 낳는 문화라면 그런 문화는 존중될 수 없을 것이다. 다문화 공존이라는 미명 하에 그 문화의 구성원들에 대한 차별과 억압마저 용인될 수는 없다. 왜냐하면 각 개인들은 무아적 존재이고, 연기적 존재이지만, 불성을 가진 존엄한 존재이기 때문이다.
Abstract
When the uniqueness of a specific culture is insisted on and it is assumed as ‘invariant substance', it is possible that the assertion is necessarily reduced into the separationism which apes multi-culturalism. This assertion is not right, judging from the idea of Buddhist non-self. Temporarily, ‘Invariant substance' might look firm and invariant. But it is not existent, bearing a very long time in mind. Nevertheless, believing in the existence of invariant substance and clinging to it is attributed to the fabrication of our thought. Therefore, such an assimilation or multi-culturalism which assumes the invariant substance is wrong. Different kinds of cultures exist interdependently with each other, for cultures or identities are not extant as substances. Non-substance(non-self) means interdependence. Conversely, interdependence means non-substance(non-self). Cultures do not exist independently, isolatedly. They affect each other and transform their images. Cultures are multi-cultural in nature. Co-existence of many other cultures is right in view of ontological and axiological spheres. Individuals live in their cultures and create their cultures. The fundamental idea of multi-culturalism is the recognition and respect about those cultures. But such cultures that give rise to the discrimination and suppression must not be respected. The discrimination and suppression of the members of those cultures must not be accepted under the good name of multi-cultural co-existence, for each individual is a non-self, interdependent and at the same time dignified existence holding Buddha-nature.
