다문화주의에서 문화의 의미와 해석

Abstract

This article explored what culture means and how the culture is interpreted in multiculturalism focused on arguments of liberal multiculturalism, egalitarian liberalism, and ‘multiculturalism without culture’, and also suggested three things for multiculalism ‘with culture’. First, we should be sensitive to protecting and guaranteeing basic liberty including preferences and expressions of individuals and groups. It is necessary to emphasize reasonable autonomy, to guarantee liberty for minority group to have their social and political institution, and to have the principle of value neutrality to view culture. second, we should not ignore equality of rights for individuals and groups by paying attention minor groups’ cultural distinctiveness. It is needed to emphasize guarantee of minority groups’ rights to culturally participate in political and social area, observance of mutual duty between major and minor groups, and prior improvement of injustice problem rooted in asymmetric relationships in society. Third, we should not arbitrarily divide and distinguish individuals and groups by being arrested flexible and uncertain cultural perspective. It is suggested to emphasize interpretation of the culture based on normative point of view, care of being bound by instrumental perspective of law and cognitive perspective of tradition, and continuous confirmation of commonality and similarity in individuals and groups. We should be careful not to mobilize the culture for socialization and politicization and interpret arbitrarily it while concentrating on cultural usefulness. This paper recommends that pursuing multiculalism ‘with culture’ becomes another main point of multiculalism.
