본 연구는 미학과 윤리학의 상호연관성에서 숭고의 문제를 탐구한다. 숭고는 그 뿌리가 고대 희랍 비극의 ‘카타르시스’ 개념에 닿아 있으며, 근대 취미론의 경향을 지닌 도덕감 학파(특히, 샤프츠베리)와 칸트의 숭고 논의를 비롯하여 포스트모더니즘의 미학 원리로 제시된 리오타르의 숭고 개념에까지 뻗어 있다. 본 연구는 ‘숭고의 미학’을 도덕교육의 맥락에서 논의하였다. ‘숭고’의 윤리학적 가치는 근대 이후 18세기에 이르기까지 지배적이었던 ‘이기주의 윤리학’을 극복하는 데 큰 기여를 했다는 점에 있다. 근대 윤리학의 지형에 깊이 드리워진 이기주의적 윤리학으로부터 이타주의적 윤리학으로 전환의 계기를 마련한 것이 바로 숭고이다. 때문에 숭고의 문제는 미학 논의에만 국한되지 않고, 윤리학과 도덕교육에도 유의미한 영향력을 미친다. 숭고는, 칸트의 어법으로 말하자면, 타율적인 도덕성(가언명법)으로부터 자율적인 도덕성(정언명법)으로 방향전환을 가능케 하는 ‘심성의 혁명’의 계기 중 하나이다. 불쾌로부터 시작하여 쾌로 귀결되는 복합감정으로서 숭고는 ‘아파하는 존재’로서 인간 삶에 노정된 제약된 상황을 극복할 수 있는 일종의 정신적 자산이다. 콜버그의 논의에서 알 수 있듯이 우리는 숭고의 감정을 통해 일상의 습관화된 도덕성을 벗어나 삶의 각성과 도덕적 통찰에 이를 수 있으며, 자기중심성으로부터 벗어나 타인과 사회로 시선을 돌릴 수 있다. 더 나아가 숭고는 인격의 핵심을 로고스에서 찾던 모더니즘의 편협한 인간관으로부터 로고스와 파토스 간 역동성과 균형감을 지닌 건강한 인간상의 논거가 될 수 있다.
Abstract
This study delves into the problem of the sublime in the context of the meeting between aesthetics and ethics. The root of the sublime reaches out the concept of catharsis in Aristotle’s Poetics and touches moral-sense-school and Kant’s aesthetics. Futhermore, the concept of sublime includes Schiller’s Würde(dignity), the Dionycian of Nietzsche, and the sublime of Lyotard who presented as the principle of post-modern aesthetics. This paper handles the aesthetics of the sublime in the vein of moral education. The ethical worth of the sublime lies in contributing to overcoming Hobbesian morality which permeated cultural atmosphere of 18th century. The problem of the sublime, therefore, is not only the concern of aesthetics, but also that of ethics and moral education. The sublime, as the usage of Kant’s term, is one of the possible conditions enabling to revolution of mind through shifting from hypothetical to categorical imperative. The sublime as complex emotion which begins displeasure and leads to pleasure is a kind of mental resource to surmount the limited situation for us as homo patiens to undergo. According to Kohlberg, we can escape routine(habitual) morality, and gain awakening and moral insight with the help of the sublime. It can turn our eyes from egocentrism to others and society. Moreover the sublime can be the reason to keep dynamic balance between logos and pathos which helps mental health.
