Abstract

This study is an ethical study to find the basis of Self-Preservation in moral emotion. In this article, the following questions are raised as the central problem. When we seek the endeavor of self-preservation to conform to our own norms of self-preservation, without seeking outside, do we have morality as the basis and final judgment of the norm? The writer sought to find the answer that the subject of judgment or act should be moral based on the basis and final judgment. The author critically examines the theory of various thinkers in relation to self-preservation, in order to support the above central question and argument. Philosophically, there is a theoretical flow and various perspectives on the concept of 'self-preservation' which is closely related to the problem of 'Subject' after Descartes 'Cogito' thought in Western modern philosophy. The author will examine the existing theoretical flows related to 'self-preservation' in two major trends. One is the theoretical flow of Individually personal self-preservation, based on Hobbes and Spinoza. It began with the modern era of the West. And the other is the theoretical flow of newly transformed social self-preservation, based on from G.W.F. Hegel to Axel Honneth. These two groups will be considered as discourses for the endeavor of social self-preservation, and their characteristics, differences and problems. Next, I will present and put a foundation stone for ‘Ethics of moral Self-Preservation’, which can overcome the above two trends. In order to establish the basis of this theory, let us examine the central content of Kant's sublime theory, his moral theory, and Burke's sublime theory. Through these discussions, we hope that the possible theoretical and practical foundation of ‘Ethics of moral Self-Preservation’.
