Abstract

This study aims to understand an approach of neurobiology on human nature and to examine the specific neurobiology studies for altruism critically. Although neurobiology has been recognized as a descriptive of ethics and that is needed and worthy but there are considerable limits. This study has shown that it is impossible to examine human behavior psychologically with an argument of psychological egoism and how neurobiology explains about human behavior and psychology in a new approach. And then, it reveals that meanings and limits of neurobiology by reviewing the actual research case for altruism. Neurobiology research cases perform an experiment of neural bases of altruism, there are problematic in experimental design, it degrades the validity of research. These researchers did not distinguish between individual moral behavior, moral self perception and real morality of agency, and overlooked motivational element of altruism in using the term. Not only that they draw conclusions beyond the outcomes of research. The neural bases that are insisted as structural and functional causes for altruism, but that are the requirements of altruism, not sufficient conditions. Therefore the biological ethics theories include neurobiology are needed an in-depth understanding for altruism. And biological determinism should be avoided that links human behavior directly into the neural elements. The meanings of study won’t be stretched. Finally the purpose of specific neurological studies should be distinguished from the goals of evolutionary biology.
