반성적 평형에서 정합주의와 토대주의

반성적 평형은 롤즈가 자신의 정의의 원칙을 정당화하기 위해 사용한 방법론이다. 숙고된 도덕 판단과 도덕 원칙의 정합성을 추구한다는 점에서 정합주의의 성격을 가지고 있지만, 이 방법에 토대주의의 요소가 포함되어 있다는 비판을 받기도 한다. 이러한 비판은 쉽게 대답되기 어려운 복잡한 논의가 필요한데, 일반적으로 정합주의와 토대주의는 정당화 이론의 논의에서 정반대의 관점으로 이해되기 때문이다. 결국 그 원인은 정합주의의 방법론으로 기획된 반성적 평형의 방법 안에 토대주의적 특징이 숨겨져 있기 때문이다. 구체적으로는 반성적 평형의 방법의 출발점에서 중요한 역할을 담당하는 숙고된 도덕 판단이 차지하는 역할이 전체의 과정에서 지나치게 과중하다는 것이다. 이러한 문제에 대한 대안으로 1) 다니엘즈의 넓은 반성적 평형과 2) 반주어가 구분한 온건한 토대주의와 약한 토대주의의 해석을 받아들이는 것이 있다. 이 둘의 방법은 숙고된 도덕 판단이 가지는 토대로서의 성격을 어느 정도 제한하거나 완화하는 결과를 가져오기는 하지만, 토대주의의 문제를 해결하는 근본적인 해결책이라고 보기는 어렵다. 다른 대안으로는 3) 토대주의를 세분화하고, 최종적인 인식적 토대를 인정하는 방법이 있다. 이러한 접근은 최종의 토대를 직관으로 환원시킨다는 점에서 반성적 평형이 직관주의에 위장한 것에 불과하다는 더 심각한 문제로 빠뜨린다. 반성적 평형의 방법에서 가장 핵심인 정합성은 인식적 정당화의 차원에서 필요조건일 수는 있지만, 충분조건이 될 수는 없다. 그리고 숙고된 도덕 판단에 기초 신념이나 제1전제로서의 역할을 부여하는 토대주의적 성격은 증명되지 않는 문제를 해결해야하는 부담이 있다. 따라서 대안적인 반성적 평형은 넓은 여건에서 정합성을 추구하되, ‘발견적 차원’의 정당화에 만족해야 할 것이다. 이러한 반성적 평형의 방법은 발견적 장치로서의 역할을 하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Reflective equilibrium is the methodology that Rawls used to justify the principles of justice. Although it shows the nature of coherentism in the pursuit of consistency between considered moral judgments and moral principles, it is also criticized for it's nature of foundationalism in this method. Such criticism requires complex discussions that are difficult to answer easily, as coherentism and foundationalism are generally understood in the opposite light of the argument in the theory of justification. In the end, the reason for this is that within the method of reflective equilibrium, which was designed as a method of coherentism, the nature of foundationalism is hidden. As solutions to this problem, there are the acceptance of N. Daniels' wide reflective equilibrium and the interpretation of moderate and weak foundationalism, separated by L. BonJour. Although their methods have some consequences of limiting or easing their character as the foundation of moral judgment, they are not considered to be fundamental solutions to the problem of foundationalism. While coherence, which is at the core of the method of reflective equilibrium, may be necessary for epistemic justification, it can not be sufficient. And the foundationalism character that gives the role of a basic belief or a primary premise to considered moral judgments has the burden of solving a problem that is not proven. Thus, an alternative reflective equilibrium would have to seek consistency in a wide range of circumstances, but be satisfied with the justification for the ‘heuristic device’.
