응용 윤리학의 방법으로서 자연화된 반성적 평형

전통적인 규범 윤리학이 접근하기 어려운 현대의 윤리적 문제들의 실천적 해결에 일차적 목표를 두는 응용 윤리학은 이제 새로운 윤리학의 분야로 자리매김하고 있다. 이 과정에서 반성적 평형은 응용 윤리학의 분야에서 활용될 수 있는 주요한 방법으로 주목을 받고 있다. 원리와 사례에 동등한 관심을 가지는 반성적 평형에서는 구체적 윤리적 쟁점에 관한 도덕 판단과 개별적 사례들을 포괄하는 일반적인 도덕 원리가 서로 일관된 체계로 나아가게 된다. 반성적 평형은 새로운 도전에 개방적이며, 역동적인 과정을 포함한다는 점에서 복잡한 응용 윤리의 주제들에 적합한 탐구 방법이라는 평가를 받고 있다. 하지만 한편으로 반성적 평형은 신뢰할 수 없는 주관적 판단들 간의 정합성에만 의존하는 순환 논증에 불과하다는 비판이 꾸준히 제기되어왔다. 반성적 평형이 응용 윤리학에서 유효한 방법으로 인정받기 위해서는 객관적인 정당화의 기준을 제공할 수 있는 온건한 토대가 필요해 보인다. 이때 과학은 관련된 사실을 통해 오류를 교정하고, 합리적인 탐구 방법을 제공함으로써 반성적 평형에서 온건한 토대의 역할을 담당할 수 있다. 독립적 신뢰성을 가지는 과학 분야의 지식은 잘못된 사실에 기초한 도덕적 주장을 교정해주고, 과학적 탐구 방법은 동등한 정합적 체계를 유지하는 복수의 반성적 평형들 중에서 최선의 대안을 잠정적으로 선택할 수 있는 합리적인 절차를 마련할 수 있다. 이러한 자연화된 반성적 평형은 개방성과 융통성을 가지는 정합주의 성격은 유지하는 동시에 정당화를 위한 객관적인 기준을 제시한다는 점에서 응용 윤리학을 위한 대안적 방법이 될 수 있다.
Abstract
Applied ethics, which aims at the practical resolution of contemporary ethical problems that traditional normative ethics is difficult to approach, is now establishing itself as a new field of ethics. In this context, reflective equilibrium has attracted attention as a major method to be used in the field of applied ethics. In the reflective equilibrium, which considers principles and cases equally, both moral judgments on practical ethical issues and general principles that cover specific cases move toward a consistent system. Reflective equilibrium is evaluated as an important inquiry method for issues of complicated applied ethics in that it is open to new challenges and involves dynamic processes. However, critics say that the method of reflective equilibrium that follows coherentism is only a circular argument and is based on subjective judgment. On the other hand, however, there has been a steady of stream of criticism that reflective equilibrium is merely a circular argument that relies only on consistency among unreliable subjective judgments. In order for reflective to function in a plausible method in applied ethics, it seems necessary to have a moderate foundation to provide objective standards of justification. Science can serves as a moderate foundation in reflective equilibrium by correcting errors through relevant scientific facts and proving rational scientific method of inquiry. Knowledge in the field of science with independent credibility corrects moral arguments based on wrong scientific facts, and scientific method can provide a rational procedure to provisionally choose the best alternative among multiple reflective equilibrium that maintain an equal coherent system. This naturalized reflective equilibrium maintains the characteristics of cohentism with openness and flexibility while presenting objective standard for justification. In this regard, it can be alternative method of applied ethics.
