반성적 평형은 정당한 도덕 이론을 탐구하는 방법론으로서 롤즈가 제안한 개념이다. 이 방법의 목적은 숙고된 도덕 판단과 도덕 원칙 간의 상호조정을 통해 정합적이며 포괄적인 도덕 이론을 정당화하려는 것이다. 하지만 반성적 평형의 탐구 방법을 통해 도덕 이론의 객관성을 확보할 수 있다는 롤즈의 주장과는 반대로 이 방법은 신뢰할 수 없는 직관을 체계화한 것에 불과하다는 비판을 받는다. 이에 다니엘즈는 배경 이론의 요소를 도입하여 더 넓은 범위의 객관성을 확보하고자 넓은 반성적 평형을 정교화하여 제시한다. 그러나 이것도 반성적 평형이 직관주의적 요소를 지닌다는 비판에 대한 결정적인 반론이 될 수는 없었다. 직관주의는 궁극적인 도덕 원리를 그 자체로 증명되거나 자명한 것으로 파악하기 때문에 정당화의 논증 방식을 가지고 있지 않다. 이에 직관주의는 객관성을 잃고 상대주의나 주관주의로 귀결된다는 비판을 받아왔는데, 반성적 평형이 직관주의에 해당한다면 마찬가지의 비판에 노출될 수밖에 없다. 도덕 철학의 역사에서 꾸준히 제기되어 온 직관주의의 메타윤리적 한계뿐만 아니라 이에 더하여 현대의 과학적 연구 성과들도 반성적 평형의 직관주의적 요소에 대해 문제를 제기하고 있다. 특히 심리학과 신경과학 분야에서는 도덕적 직관이 신뢰할 수 없음을 증명하는 자료들을 보여주는 결과를 끊임없이 제시하고 있다. 따라서 대안적인 반성적 평형은 직관적인 토대에 의존하지 않고서 객관성을 확보하는 방법이어야 한다. 가장 유력한 대안은 현대과학과 정합성을 추구하는 반성적 평형이다.
Abstract
Reflective equilibrium is a notion proposed by J. Rawls as a method of exploring reasonable moral theories. The purpose of this method is to justify a coherence and comprehensive moral theory through mutual adjustment of considered moral judgements and moral principles. However, contrary to Rawls's argument to gain objectivity in the pursuit of moral theory through the method of reflective equilibrium, it is criticized that this is merely a systematic construct. While Daniels introduced a wide reflective equilibrium to gain wider range of objectivity, it could not be a critical argument for criticism that reflective equilibrium has an intuitive perspective. Intuitionism does not have the arguments of justifying justification, since the ultimate moral principle is determined either by itself or self-evident. Therefore, intuitionism has been criticized for lacking objectivity and ending with relativism or subjectivism, which is bound to be exposed to the same criticism, if reflective equilibrium pertains to intuitionism. In addition to the meta-ethics, which has steadily been raised in the history of moral philosophy, the modern scientific research results are aimed at the intuitive elements of reflective equilibrium. In particular, the findings of psychology and neuroscience continue to present data proving that moral intuition is unreliable. Thus, alternative reflective equilibrium should be a method of achieving objectivity without relying on intuitive foundations. The strongest alternative is the reflective equilibrium that consistent to contemporary science.
