Abstract
The purpose of this study is to argue that raising the question, “Why be moral?” with a reflective intent and attempting to answer it with moral reasons not only provides meaning to our practical lives but also enables us to live a meaningful life. First, I discussed the need to consider objective and universal moral foundations when providing meaning to our practical lives or evaluating a meaningful life, through a critique of subjectivist theories in Chapter Ⅱ. Next, in Chapter Ⅲ, I discussed the fact that something profoundly immoral could make it impossible to enhance the meaning of life or live a meaningful life, and through this, I derived the moral statement as a negative answer to the question “Why be moral?”—“Because not being profoundly immoral is a necessary condition for making a meaningful life possible.” Finally, in Chapter Ⅳ, I discussed that through the Kantian answer to the question “Why be moral?”, the morality can endow the moral agent with the qualifications for happiness and the dignity of human being. Based on this discussion, I argued that the positive answer, “Because the morality enhances the meaning of life and makes our lives more meaningful,” can be justified. Through these discussions, I suggested that anyone who desires to live a meaningful life should raise the question “Why be moral?” with the intent of reflecting on their actions and life, and should strive to answer that reflective question with moral reasons.
