Abstract
Since John Rawls proposed his wide reflective equilibrium (hereafter, WRE) in A Theory of Justice (1971/1999), WRE has been widely used as an important methodology in the field of practical ethics. In this use, WRE tends to be understood only as the method of coherence in reasoning and the structure of epistemic justification, which are able to be applied to various fields as well as moral philosophy. In this general understanding of WRE, Rawls’s WRE does not explain why parties in the original position should observe their chosen principles in strict compliance, and why citizens in the well-ordered society should willingly accept and obey the right after congruence argument. In this paper, I argue that Rawls’s WRE has a moral philosophical feature as well as a general understanding, and the former feature can explicate people’s motivation in moral psychology. This moral philosophical feature of WRE is the normativity as a motivation in moral psychology, as Christine Korsgaard proposes in her Sources of Normativity. She argues that a person as a reflective being examines her goods in the process of reflective endorsement and willingly observes her endorsement in her practical and moral identities. I argue that Rawls’s discussion of moral person with her capacity for a sense of justice and her capacity for a conception of the good, the process of revision and adjustment in WRE, and Rawls’s self-respect arguments correspond with Korsgaard’s arguments of normativity. Rawls' self-respect is formed along with a sense of justice in the development of moral psychology and embodies the identity of a moral agent, because it is a dynamic and practical value that defines one’s own actions as valuable and meaningful. This paper, which examines the normativity as the moral and philosophical feature of Rawls’ WRE, not only enriches our understanding of WRE and self-respect, but also contribute to supplement Rawls’s moral psychology in A Theory of Justice, which seems to be weak and insufficient in Rawls’s discussions of original position and stability argument.
