에피쿠로스의 쾌락주의는 쾌락의 적극적 증진 대신에 소극적으로 고통의 제거와 부재 상태를 추구함으로써 쾌락주의의 역설을 벗어날 수 있었다. 하지만 그의 쾌락주의는 고통의 부재 상태(aponia와 ataraxia)를 쾌락과 동일시하는 오류와 함께 금욕을 쾌락 추구의 합리적 방법을 넘어서 쾌락의 구성 요소로 간주하는 오류를 범하였다. 그 결과, 그의 금욕적 쾌락주의는 쾌락주의의 이름으로 금욕주의를 주장하는 ‘전도된 쾌락주의의 역설’에 빠졌다.
Abstract
Epicurus' hedonism could escape the criticism of falling into the paradox of hedonism by negatively and indirectly pursuing the removal of pain and the state of aponia and ataraxia instead of positively and directly pursuing the promotion of pleasure. However, his hedonism not only made the mistake of identifying the absence of suffering with pleasure, but also committed an error in regarding abstinence as a component of pleasure beyond the rational method of seeking pleasure. As a result, his ascetic hedonism fell into the paradox of "reversed hedonism" claiming asceticism in the name of hedonism.
