Abstract
The paper aims to examine why Epicurus described the same pleasure separately as kinetic-katastematic pleasure. The theory of happiness in ancient ethics was a common denominator of all philosophers, and pleasure was a popular topic in discussing happiness. Epicurus, who is famous for claiming that all atoms are driven by accident, also adhered to the teleological happiness as the final purpose of life in ethics. Epicurus thought all pleasure is good, and argued that living happily is in itself a choice-worthy, a telos, and a self-sufficient one. Epicurus explains what pleasure as happiness is, describing kinetic pleasure as joy and delight, katastematic pleasure as aponia and ataraxia. Kinetic pleasure, which begins in a natural state, aims for katastematic pleasure in a divine state, and katastematic pleasure as happiness was a succession to Aristotle’s concept of pleasure as an activity.
