우리 사회에서 민족주의가 통일담론의 중심이 되고, 남북한 통일의 필요성을 뒷받침하는 강력한 근거가 되어야 한다는 주장은 점차 설득력을 상실해 왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 남북한 주민들의 역사적 사회문화적 특수성에 주목할 때, 민족 정체성 관념이나 민족주의를 다시금 호명하지 않고서는 분단체제의 극복과 통일공동체 형성의 당위성과 가능성을 제대로 설명할 수 없을 것이다. 세계화와 다문화 사회로의 전환 속에서 민족동질성 통일론은 그것이 수반하는 한계와 난점에도 불구하고 미래 지향적 관점에서 비판적으로 재해석하여 적용한다면 유익한 통일논의의 토대가 될 수 있다. 분단체제의 고착화에 따른 남북한 사이의 적대적 대결 상황을 종식하고 통일공동체를 지향해 나가는데 있어서 그리고 그것을 민주적 정치공동체로 가꾸어 나가는데 있어서 민족정체성 관념은 여전히 남북한 주민들의 소통과 유대를 가능하게 하는 원형이자 공동의 정서적 기반이기 때문이다.
Abstract
In our society, the argument that nationalism should become the center of unification discourse and a strong basis for supporting the need for Korean unification has gradually lost its persuasive power. Nevertheless, when paying attention to the historical, socio-cultural specificity of the people of North and South Korea, the legitimacy and possibility of overcoming the division system and forming a unified community cannot be properly explained without renaming national identity or nationalism. In the midst of globalization and transition to a multicultural society, the theory of national identity unification can be the basis for useful unification discussions if it is critically reinterpreted and applied from a future-oriented perspective despite its limitations and difficulties. This is because the idea of national identity is still an ideological prototype and a common emotional foundation that enables inter-Korean communication and ties in ending the hostile confrontation caused by the fixation of the division system and promoting it as a unified community.
