본고는 롤스의 정치적 자유주의가 스스로 부여하는 자립성 요구와 하버마스가 논쟁을 통해 제안하는 겸손 요구를 동시에 충족시킬 수 있는지 탐구하는 논문이다. 이에 하버마스-롤스 논쟁에서 자립성과 겸손의 의미와 위상을 구체적으로 분석한 뒤 두 개념이 상충하는 현상을 자립성/겸손 딜레마로 규정한다. 자립성/겸손 딜레마는 중첩적 합의의 재해석을 통해 해소할 수 있다. 단, 이는 중첩적 합의가 요구하는 시민성을 제시해야 할 필요성으로 귀결된다.
Abstract
This paper explores whether Rawls' political liberalism can simultaneously satisfy the requirement for freestandingness, which it imposes on itself, and the requirement for modesty, which Habermas suggests through discourse. To this end, it first analyzes the status and meaning of freestandingness and modesty in the Habermas-Rawls debate in detail, then identifies the phenomenon where these two concepts conflict as the freestandingness/modesty dilemma. The freestandingness/modesty dilemma can be resolved through a reinterpretation of overlapping consensus. However, this leads to the necessity of presenting the form of citizenship that overlapping consensus requires.
