우리나라 사회는 이미 다문화적 사회로 변화되었다고 할 수 있다. 이런 상황에서 정부는 문화적 충돌을 방지하고 서로가 하나의 국가로 공존할 수 있는 정책을 필요로 할 것이다. 그리고 그런 정책들은 하나의 분명한 원칙을 가져야 한다고 생각한다. 이 논문에서는 롤즈의 이론이 이런 정책 입안을 위한 철학적 배경을 제시할 수 있음을 제안한다. 롤즈는 한 국가 내에 다양한 종교적, 철학적, 도덕적 교설들을 지지하는 공동체들이 공존하기 위해서 국가가 중립성을 지켜야 된다는 입장이다. 그러나 롤즈가 주장하는 중립성은 도덕을 완전히 배제하는 중립성은 아니다. 롤즈에 따르면, 국가가 중립적이어야 한다는 것은 국가가 특정한 포괄적 교설에 의존하지 않는다는 것을 의미한다. 그리고 그런 중립성이 적용되는 범위는 사회의 기본 구조에 한정된다고 말한다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 먼저 롤즈의 이런 중립성 주장을 샌델의 비판과 함께 소개하고자 한다. 그리고 그런 중립성 입장에 근거하여, 다원적 상황에 처한 우리 사회에서 시행되어야 할 시민의 덕 교육이 어떤 내용이어야 하는지에 대하여 말하고자 한다.
Abstract
Our society has already changed into a multicultural society. In this situation, government will need policies that prevent cultural conflicts and make possible to coexist as one nation. I think such policies should have one clear principle. In this paper, I suggests that Rawls's theory can provide a philosophical background for such policy-making. Rawls insists that the state must keep neutrality in order for communities supporting different religious, philosophical, and moral doctrines to coexist within one country. According to Rawls, this means that the state does not rely on certain comprehensive doctrines. And he says that the scope to which neutrality applies is limited to the basic structure of society. In this paper, I will introduce Rawls's argument for neutrality first with Sandel's criticism. And then, I will say about the content of virtue education on the basis of the neutrality.
