Abstract

This study aims to identify directions for conceptualizing digital citizenship in the post-digital society. To this end, it examines the defining features of post-digital society and digital citizens, the transition from traditional state-based citizenship to digital citizenship, and three major conceptual approaches to digital citizenship: the normative/behavioral approach, the multidimensional approach, and the critical/radical approach. The review reveals that digital citizenship in a post-digital context should be conceptualized in the following ways. First, it should encompass local and global citizenship alongside state citizenship. Second, it should incorporate an understanding of the relationships among technology, humans, and society. Third, it should include digital literacy and digital ethics. Fourth, it should reflect democratic awareness and political and social participation. Fifth, it should provide universal citizenship education for all citizens. Sixth, it should integrate multicultural citizenship. Finally, it must remain context-dependent and fluid. These findings suggest the need for a more holistic, relational, and context-sensitive framework for digital citizenship in the post-digital era.
