Abstract

In this paper we analyze differences in the socioeconomic background ofthe local election candidates focusing on the competitiveness of femalecandidates. Our results imply that the average voting shares between maleand female candidates are not statistically significant. For all candidatesrunning in local constituencies we find that party characteristics, thefact of incumbency, or the former councillor’s experience were among thefactors affecting the voters’ turnout the most while the candidates’ genderdoes not appear to be as important compared to the other factors. Wedid not identify any significant differences between male and femalecandidates in terms of the differences between individual voting behaviorsin the local constituencies and the parties’ proportional representationvotes. An analysis of the differences between voting groups for the femalecandidates implies that political party characteristics and whether or notthe candidates have had previous experience are the most important factorsaffecting the voting outcome. The general conclusion of this study is that, contrary to what previous studies have found, female candidates are notless competitive compared to their male counterparts.
