Abstract

This paper analyzes the electoral competitiveness of women candidates in the higher-level local council elections in South Korea. One of the main findings from the pooled data set analysis of five elections from 1998 to 2014 is that there is no statistical difference between women and men candidates in determining who won the election. Women candidates have advantages to win the election when they are incumbent or nominated by political parties making them run in the capital area, cities, and open seats. These results indicate that the reason for women’s under-representation is not the sex of candidates but the decision of political parties who have refused to select women as candidates. Also it suggests that it is a good strategy for political parties to nominate more women candidates in the capital area, cities, and open seats to increase women’s political representation.
