Abstract

This study examined reciprocal causal effects among self-esteem, happiness, and d epressive s ymptoms in c hildren. On basis of the vulnerability model of low self-esteem on depressive symptoms, the effect perspective of depressive symptoms on low self-esteem, the top down theory of subjective well-being, the utility perspective of happiness on positive perception, the stress generation model of depressive symptoms, this study builded reciprocal causal model among self-esteem, subjective happiness, and depressive symptoms in children. This study used data sets from 1st to 2nd waves in Korean Children and Youth Panel 2018(KCYPS 2018). This study examined reciprocal causal effects using Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling (ARCL). Results revealed in the followings. First, relations between self-esteem and subjective happiness were reciprocal. Second, self-esteem didn’t predict depressive symptoms in the future, but depressive symptoms predicted self-esteem in the future. Third, happiness predicted depressive symptoms in the future, but depressive symptoms didn’t predict subjective happiness in the future. Fourth, gender predicted depressive symptoms.
