Abstract

The aim of this article is to explore the role of the war to play in the process of nation-state building of Russia in comparison with the European cases. For serving research purposes, this article is focusing on analysis of literary texts with reference to war motives, its mechanism, stateness, state capacity, modernization and politico-economic reforms in the period of Peter the Great. The research is restricted to the period from the early 17th century till the early 18th century in which Peter the Great introduced the European standards into Russia. The objects of research center upon the Smolensk War, the Crimean Campaign, the Great Northern War. The growth of imperial Russia retains saliant features in the ‘scale and tempo’ of territorial expansion through wars. In the early 18th century, a part of Finland, a broad area of the Black Sea basin, northeastern regions of Poland already had been incorporated into imperial Russia, making a exception of the expansion to Asia. Since 18th century Russia had actively intervened in European Questions, and regarded herself as a strategic balancer in Europe and a regular member in modern European community.
