Abstract

This paper examines the role that the Hermitage, Russia's representative museum, played in the Europeanization of the Russian Empire. In general, ‘Europeanization’ is a concept formed after the First and Second World Wars and is considered to be more like Europe. It is a interdisciplinary and ideological concept and is mainly used in political, economic, historical, and legal situations. In its origins, however, it can be seen that it was already developed when Europe expanded its scope of activity globally until the 19th century. Today the Hermitage Museum, established and developed during that period, can be said to be a representative symbol of the historical trend of Russia establishing itself as an empire and advancing Europeanization. While Russia was transforming into an empire as Peter the Great moved the capital of the empire from Moscow to St. Petersburg and attempted a westernization policy, forcing Europeanization, Catherine the Great, the founder of the Hermitage Museum, inherited Peter the Great's work and built an empire. At the same time as completing it, she contributed to the Europeanization of the empire's culture and arts through her extensive collection. It can be regarded that the Hermitage Museum had played an important role in the process of forming and completing the empire, with Russia absorbing the ideas, emotions, and customs of Western European countries and dramatically advancing Europeanization.
