Abstract

Nekhliudov, one of Tolstoy's alter egos, appears as the protagonist in four of the writer's fictional works. Only one of them (Nekhliudov of Resurrection) has received much attention, but the others have largely been overlooked by the critics as well as the readers. This article investigates all of the four Nekhliudovs in an attempt to examine the path Tolstoy's alter ego takes over time. In particular, special attention is paid to the treatment of space in each work, since space plays an important role in each work's poetics and consequently Nekhliudov's journey. In the early tales written in the 1850s, Tolstoy set his hero in three different spatial settings (city, countryside, and Lucerne) and established a link between his alter ego and certain moral concerns. The first of the trilogy, “A Billiard-Marker's Note,” touches upon the relationship of the city and its corrupting effect on man, whereas “A Landowner's Morning” deals with Nekhliudov's noble but disappointing quest in his country estate. “Lucerne,” on the other hand, focuses on Nekhliudov's railing against civilization. Tolstoy's last novel Resurrection, encompassing the various spatial settings including Siberia, presents the hero on a new level as Tolstoy negotiated with the issues raised previously in the early Nekhliudov tales.
