Abstract

The purpose of this article is to critically examine the practical implications of neuroscience’s challenge to moral responsibility triggered by B. Libet’s experiment on the question of free will. To do so, I will first clarify the results of Libet’s experiment, and then scrutinize its ethical implications. Based on this review, I would like to analyze empirical and philosophical objections to seek moral responsibility. The former is a strategy that denies Libet’s experiment itself, and the latter is a strategy that shows that the denial of free will and moral responsibility cannot be inferred from Libet’s results. Through critical discussions on these two counter-arguments, I will argue that even though Libet's experiment is quite successful in refuting free will, it is still possible to attribute moral responsibility to an agent based on moral community and moral practice.
