오늘날 우리는 지구화(globalization)시대에 살고 있다. 이런 상황에서 주목되는 것은 새로운 문제들뿐만 아니라 ‘낡은’ 문제들이 더욱 강화되는 현상이다. 지구화와 함께 전통적인 것으로 여겨졌던 인종적, 민족적, 종교적 갈등과 적의(hostility)들이 심화되고 있다. 이 적의가 구체적 행동으로 표출될 경우, 그것은 매우 직접적/극단적인 폭력 시위나 테러의 형태를 띤다. 적대와 폭력의 심화는 말 그대로 ‘지구 전체’에 걸쳐있으며, 이런 의미에서 이를 적대의 지구화(globalization of antagonism)라고 부를 수 있다. 나는 현대 정치철학자인 샹탈 무페(Chantal Mouffe)와 에티엔 발리바르(Étienne Balibar)가 문제 삼는 바를 적대의 지구화 현상과 연결할 수 있다고 본다. 무페와 발리바르의 사유는 적대의 문제에 시사하는 바가 크며, 따라서 이를 자세히 살펴보는 작업이 필요하다. 나는 정치적 문제와 관련하여 중요한 두 개념, 즉 정치 공동체(political community)과 시민권(citizenship)의 개념을 중심으로 이들의 논의를 요약하고, 이들의 차이점과 유사점을 정리할 것이다. 그리고 특히 유사점에 주목하여, 이들이 제시하는 적대의 지구화 현상에 맞서는 정치의 조건의 내용을 구체화 할 것이다. 무페와 발리바르의 정치철학은 폭력과 적대의 문제에 대한 적극적인 이론적 개입이며, 이런 시도는 우리로 하여금 정치의 조건들을 다시금 숙고하게 만든다.
Abstract
Today, we are living through 'the age of globalization.' In this situation, there is much attention towards not just 'new' problems but also 'old' ones. Racial, national, or religious conflicts and hostilities are getting worse. When these conflicts and antagonism are expressed as specific actions, they take forms of very direct/extreme violent demonstrations or terrorism. The aggravation of antagonism and violence already spread across literally 'all over the world', so we could call the phenomena as 'globalization of antagonism.'I think what contemporary political philosophers, Chantal Mouffe and Étienne Balibar, make an issue of could be connected with globalization of antagonism. Their thoughts are full of suggestions about the issue of antagonism, then detailed analysis is required. I will summarize their discussion around concepts of political community and citizenship which could be critical on the political issues, and arrange differences and similarities between them. Especially focusing on similarities, I will specify contents of conditions for politics against globalization of antagonism they suggest. Works of Mouffe and Balibar make us reconsider conditions for politics through an active theoretical intervention.
