Abstract

For a long time, Spinoza’s excommunication has been considered only in terms of the confrontation between a closed Jewish community and Spinoza, a modern individual who seeks freedom of thought. Several scholars have challenged this simplistic conception since the 1970s and emphasized the dynamism and complexity of Sephardic Jewish community in 17th-century Amsterdam to which Spinoza once belonged. Referring to the studies of these scholars, I propose the following points. First, the reason for Spinoza’s excommunication was not purely religious. Instead, other important factors such as an economic one may have highly likely intervened. Second, the excommunication may not be a unilateral violence that Spinoza suffered passively from the community. Instead, it may be a rational choice that Spinoza made as an individual in a difficult situation. Third, there is, therefore, no sufficient reason for Spinoza to hold a special resentment against the Jewish community after deviating from it. A plausible idea is that the community to Spinoza stood merely for the uncertain good like wealth, honor, lust and that the excommunication gave him an opportunity to break definitively with this uncertain good in search for an eternal good. This understanding of Spinoza’s biography helps control the over-interpretation produced by a one-sided negative view of Spinoza’s relationship with Judaism and contributes to the elucidation of the uniqueness of Spinoza’s universalism as sublimated form of his experience of Judaism.
