트랜스휴머니즘, 이상인가 신화인가 : ‘능력증강 기술이 나아가야 할 바람직한 방향에 대해서’

이 글에서는 불사까지도 추구하는 극단적인 트랜스휴머니즘의 본질적 성격과 문제점을 고찰함으로써 능력증강기술이 나아가야 할 바람직한 방향을 살펴보고자 한다. 그러나 이 글에서는 다양한 능력증강기술을 구체적으로 어떤 식으로 적용해야 할지를 문제 삼지는 않고 어디까지나 능력증강기술이 나아가야 할 방향을 극히 원리적인 차원에서 제시하는 데 그칠 것이다. 이 글은 트랜스휴머니즘의 본질적 성격을 첫째로 근대진보사상의 극단이라는 점, 둘째로 인간을 불완전한 기계로 본다는 점, 셋째로 불사에 대한 인간의 열망을 충족시키려는 종교적 성격을 갖는다는 점에서 찾았다. 그리고 그것의 문제점을 첫째로 트랜스휴머니즘은 정신을 뇌의 정보처리프로그램으로 보면서 신체로부터 분리할 수 있다고 보는 반면에 몸과 나라는 것은 분리될 수 없다는 점, 둘째로 트랜스휴머니즘은 과학이 드러내는 세계를 유일한 실재로 보는 과학주의에 빠져 있지만 근원적인 현실로서의 표정세계는 과학이 드러내는 세계에 의해서 대체될 수 없다는 점, 셋째로, 트랜스휴머니즘은 인간 정신을 뇌의 정보처리프로그램으로 환원함으로써 인간 정신이 보여주는 역사적인 풍요로움을 간과한다는 점에서 찾았다. 아울러 ‘보다 더 빠르고 보다 더 강하고 보다 더 영리하게’라는 것을 정상성과 건강함의 척도로 삼고 있는 트랜스휴머니즘의 근저에는 모든 것을 지배하고자 하는 탐욕이 깔려 있다는 사실을 드러내었다. 끝으로 능력증강기술은 트랜스휴머니즘처럼 인간의 조건 자체를 넘어서 인간을 완전한 기계로서의 신으로 변화시키는 방향에서 개발되어서는 안 되고 어디까지나 인간의 조건 안에서 인간의 조건을 개선하는 방향에서 개발되어야 한다는 일반적인 원칙을 제시했다.
Abstract
This article examines the intrinsic characteristics and problems of the extreme transcendentalism seeking the immortality, and examine the desirable direction of the human enhancement technology. However, this article does not investigate how to apply various human enhancement techniques, but it will only present the general direction of the human enhancement technology on a very principal level. The intrinsic characteristics of transhumanism are following. The transhumanism is firstly the extreme of modern progressive thought, secondly, it regards the human being as a imperfect machine, and thirdly it has the religious character to satisfy human desire for immortality. The problems of transhumanism are following. The transhumanism is firstly captivated by scientism. Secondly, while transhumanism sees the mind as a brain information processing program and sees it as separate from the body, the body and the ‘I’ can not be separated. Thirdly, transhumanism overlooks the historical richness of the human spirit. The human enhancement technology should not be developed in the direction of transforming the human being into a god as a complete machine beyond human condition, but should be developed in the direction of improving the human condition within the human condition.
