Abstract

Why did so many citizens participate in the candlelight protest? This paper claims that recent activation of political participation is the consequence of several psychological factors combined. Initially, the extremely negative evaluation on Park Geun-hye’s administration stimulated citizens’ aspiration to punish the incumbent, and the impacts became more salient to those with high level of political efficacy, intensive emotional feeling such as anger and enthusiasm, and strong belief in democracy. In addition, the existence of strong alternative such as candidate Moon Jae-in provided a good chance for the citizens to participate actively in politics.
