Abstract

This study focuses on the recent increase in the affective polarization index and aims to analyze the factors that intensify affective polarization. Specifically, it examines the relationship between protests and affective polarization. The analysis revealed that major party supporters who participated in the candlelight protests experienced an increase in positive feelings toward their preferred party and heightened hostility toward opposing parties due to the emotional stimulation experienced during the protests. Additionally, it was found that people are more likely to experience affective polarization when participating in candlelight protests compared to not participating, depending on their ideological orientation. This research seeks to contribute to the development of both protest studies and affective polarization studies by linking these independently studied areas.
