코로나 바이러스 시대의 국가 자긍심: 방역 주체의 코로나 대응 평가와 유권자의 정당 선호를 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 정부의 코로나 바이러스 대응에 대한 유권자들의 평가가 국가 자긍심에 미치는 영향력을 분석한다. 코로나 바이러스가 창궐하여 전 세계적인 영향력을 미치고 있던 상황에서, 한국의 코로나 대응, 즉 “K-방역” 은 국내외를 불문하고 상대적으로 성공적인 것으로 평가되었다. 이에 본 연구는 주요 방역 주체의 효과적인 코로나 대응은 정부 신뢰 등의 구체적 지지를 넘어 정치 공동체에 대한 지지로까지 이어질 것임을 논증한 후 이를 경험적으로 검증하였다. 분석의 결과, 주요 방역 주체의 코로나 대응 평가가 긍정적일수록 응답자가 대한민국 국민인 것을 자랑스럽게 생각하는 자부심과, 대한민국 사회에서 살아가는 것에 대한 만족감이 유의미하게 높아졌다. 그런데 국가 자긍심에 미치는 주요 방역 주체의 코로나 대응 평가의 영향력은 더불어민주당 지지자들에게서 가장 현저했던 반면, 미래통합당 지지자들에게서는 미미한 수준이었다. 이러한 결과는 유권자의 국가 자긍심이 국가의 정치적 성취에 근거하는 정도가 정당 선호에 따라 상이하다는 것을 의미한다.

Abstract

This paper explores the effect of voters’ government evaluations of COVID-19 response on their national pride. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 and having a worldwide influence, Korea's response to the coronavirus, that is, “K-Quarantine”, was evaluated as relatively successful both at home and abroad. Therefore, this study tested empirically after arguing that effective corona response by major quarantine agents would lead to support for the political community beyond specific support such as trust in government. Preliminary finding showed that the more positive the response evaluations of major quarantine agents were, the greater the pride of being proud that the respondents were Korean citizens and the satisfaction with living in Korean society significantly increased. When partisan preferences were taken into account, however, voters who identified with the ruling party showed the most prominent effect of government performance regarding COVID-19. On the contrary, it had little effect on national pride for the major opposition party identifiers. Empirical results imply that the extent to which voters’ national pride is based on government achievements differs according to party preferences.
