Abstract

Research on employees’ materialism in relation to their well-being at work is scarce even though materialistic rewards are most salient in the work places. This study aimed to examine the relationship between materialism, specifically beliefs on acquisition as the pursuit of happiness and work attitudes. We also examined how calling and internal rewards mediate the relationship between materialism and work attitudes. We recruited 217 employees from Seoul, Kyoenggi and Daegu. We found that materialism did not directly predict employees’ work attitudes which was measured by job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turn over intention. Calling and internal rewards mediated the relationship between materialism and work attitudes. This study found that employees who believe money is essential for him or her to be happy were more likely to report low on calling and dissatisfied with internal rewards, which in turn led to negative work attitudes. It is important to understand employees’ values such as materialism when we understand their well-being inside and outside of work.
