Abstract
Given doubts on the historical awareness of the Japanese government, this study examines how U.S. citizens perceive Japan’s war apologies. By focusing on the concept of soft power, this paper argues that the attractiveness of Japanese popular culture critically affects the U.S. public to think that Japan has sufficiently apologized for its military actions during the 1930s and 1940s. Individuals, who feel favorable toward Japanese popular culture as well as Japanese national brand companies such as SONY and TOYOTA, are more likely to trust Japan and think that apologies concerning damages caused by Japanese aggression to Asian countries are already sufficient. Taken together, this study clearly shows how Japanese culture can be a source of soft power.
