일반적으로 『순수이성비판』에서 이성의 규제적 원리들은 ‘발견적 원칙들’로서 주로 과학적 혹은 학문적 탐구와 관련된 것으로 이해된다. 이런 일반적 이해와 달리 우리는, 그런 규제적 원리들이 경험적 영역에서 이성적 행위자의 모든 인식 행위를 지배하는 최상 원리임을 보이고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선 II장은 이성의 규제적 원리들이 이성의 자율적 명령으로 이해될 수 있으며, 그런 명령은 인간의 인식 행위에 일종의 규범적 필연성, 즉 ‘인식적 의무’를 부여할 수 있음을 보인다. 이어지는 III장은 인식 행위와 관련된 인식적 의무의 역할을 이해하기 위해서 도덕적 행위와 관련된 도덕적 의무의 역할을 규명한다. 마지막 IV장은 도덕적 의무의 규제적 기능과의 유비를 통해 인식적 의무의 규제적 기능을 해명한다. 이를 통해 우리는 체계적 통일의 인식적 의무가 이성적 행위자의 경험적 인식 행위를 규제하는 근본적인 의무이며, 그런 의무를 부여하는 규제적 원리들은 경험적 인식 행위의 최상 원리로 이해될 수 있음을 보인다. 나아가 우리는 이런 규제적 원리들과 도덕 원리의 관계를 확인하고, 그런 관계가 이성의 통일과 관련하여 어떤 함축을 가지는지 간략히 검토한다.
Abstract
In the Critique of Pure Reason, the regulative principles of reason are generally understood as ‘heuristic principles’ which are specifically related to scientific inquiry. Contrary to this common understanding, we intend to show that such regulative principles are the supreme principles that govern all epistemic actions of rational agents in the empirical realm. For this purpose, we first show in Ch.II that the regulative principles of reason can be understood as autonomous commands of reason, and that such commands can impose a kind of normative ncessity, I.e., ‘epistemic duty’, on human epistemic actions. Then, in order to understand the role of this epistemic duty, Ch.III investigates the role of moral duty in relation to moral actions. Finally, the last Ch.IV clarifies the regulative function of epistemic duty through an analogy with the regulative function of moral duty. Through this, we will show that the epistemic duty of systematic unity is a fundamental duty that regulates the empirical epistemic actions of rational agents, and that the regulative principles which impose this epistemic duty can be understood as the supreme principles of empirical epistemic actions. Furthermore, we will identify the relation of these regulative prinicples to moral principles, and briefly consider the implications of this relation for the unity of reason.
