Abstract

The dialogue Lysis is often considered illogical and difficult by many scholars due to the semantic ambiguity of philia and the illogical structure of the arguments that define philia. In particular, in Lysis, philia is described on one hand as a reciprocal affection between objects and on the other hand as a one-sided affection towards an object. However, these descriptions in Lysis do not play a complementary role in elucidating what philia is, but rather show a conflict. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the cause of the conflict between the meanings of philia in Lysis and, through this identification, to understand Plato's intention in the dialogue. In this process, this paper reveals that Plato is not showing a conflict between one-sided affection and reciprocal affection. Instead, it argues that the reciprocal affection of those with deficiencies produces 'Good things,' which show that the self-sufficiency of 'Good' leads to aporia.
