Abstract
Plato’s Lysis presents two models of philia, i.e. the first reciprocity model (=philia as the relation between the good ones) and the second desire/erōs model (=philia as the relation between the neutral and the good). But those two seem to conflict each other, which is why the dialogue has a problem of unity. This paper tackles the problem by analysing the transitional process of successive individual discussions of the dialogue. Especially I concentrate on aporia and hypopsia (suspicion). The latter, which is a technical term found by me based on the text, is new to Plato’s readers, but it helps us to understand Plato’s deep intention in this dialogue. Those transitional devices including two hypopsiai suggest that we should not just pick up, and concentrate on, either of two models, as majority interpreters have done, but that we need reconstruct a unified model of philia by recognizing the supremacy of the second model but applying it to partial revision of the first model, not just discarding the first one. We can observe in the text that the importance of wisdom or knowledge in philia is ever from the beginning a main assumption kept intact throughout and that philosophia (as a fear against ignorance of ignorance) is continually emphasized in the text. Relying on these observations we can reconstruct a unified model of philia. The first model can be understood as the relation between the good persons in a looser sense, i.e. between persons who desire to be good. Philia throughout the text Lysis is philosophia, i.e. philia of wisdom. Philia desiring wisdom as the common good, aims, on one hand, at wisdom as the good, but, aims, on the other, at a wise person as a good one (or, more correctly, a person who desires to be good, i.e. wise). The first aspect is emphasized by the second model of philia in a wider sense, i.e. one-sided erōs model, while the latter is by the first model of philia in a narrower sense, i.e. reciprocal friendship model.
