Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of love which appears in Symposium and to find out its educational implications. This study was conducted through literature study which was carried out by means of collecting the several translations in both Korean and English of Symposium. The primary literature was compared with secondary literature in Symposium. in order to raise validity of this analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the aim of love is different from the purpose of love. The aim of love is to pursue the way of good life while the purpose of love is to attain immortality. Second, the subject of begetting is not a beloved but a lover. Begetting is what a lover does with help of a beloved. Begetting happens when a lover meets a beautiful person. In addition, whether a beloved is beautiful or not becomes known in the process of meeting or after meeting. Third, the hierarchy of love develops from beauty of individual body into universal beauty of body, universality of the custom and law, universality of studies and recognition of the world of beauty itself which really exists. The world of beauty itself has its value as it presents the example of a good human being. Fourth, Alcibiade's praises of Socrates shows how the meaning of love as Diotima presents is recognized in the real world. While the ritual of love as Diotima presents has mysterious meaning, the story introduced in Socrates Praises indicates the process of love in the real world. Fifth, the argument that love appears in Symposium is egocentric possessiveness is wrong, but there are some impersonal aspects of it. Lastly, the love in Symposium has an enlightening value of how human beings should live, and it points at a natural meaning of education.
