Abstract
This article examines the narrative aspects of the Korean War in Korean comics, and the changes in socio-cultural changes, cultural policies, changing perceptions of writers and readers, and changing themes of the works. The Korean War, one of the biggest events in Korean history and a traumatic experience for the nation, has been an important subject in literature and film. We could only assume that the same was true for comics, and we needed to organize them. Therefore, we first approached the genre of war comics to see if they could be categorized as war comics, which is defined as all comics that deal with war as a central theme or subject. In this article, we categorized Korean War-related comics from the 1950s to the present by time and content to create a chronology of war comics. In the process, we found that the production situation and number of comics, as well as their themes and contents, were greatly influenced by the changing social atmosphere, political situation, cultural policies, and readers' demands. In particular, the post-democratization and post-Cold War periods, as well as the period of inter-Korean exchanges, brought about a national and ethnic awareness of the Korean War. Cartoonists of this period expanded the scope of discussion on the Korean War by focusing on the narratives of individuals that had been erased in the grand scheme of history. In their works, the Korean War is not a forgotten event of the past, but an object of testimony, record, and mourning that is passed down to the postwar generation, remembered, and constantly recalled to become present. In addition, these works break the limitations of historical awareness held by the generation that did not experience the Korean War, and play a major role in understanding current Korean society. Thanks to these profound and diverse works, I examined how the public’s perspective on the Korean War has changed over time, how comics readers perceive it, and how comics can deal with the subject of war.
