Abstract
This thesis is to understand the situation and attitude that early Christians rejected the Roman Empire's play culture, and to identify the historical-religious situation and theological-moral basis. Early Christian writers forbade Christians from participating in pagan religious festivals, obscene theatrical performances and bloody and murderous gladiator fights, but continued to demand that they maintain a moral and religious life. In particular, theater was not only an immoral act, but also an extension of the pagan culture in which Roman female and male deity sometimes appeared, and since sexually decadent scenes were staged at religious festivals, moral and religious issues were sometimes mixed appears. There was a space limitation for gladiator matches that accommodate a large number of people, and there was a time limitation for religious festivals to be held only before and after the feast days of the gods and goddesses concerned. However, the theater culture, which was also present in ordinary small towns and had no restrictions on performance time, was much more accessible to Christians, and sexual indulgence and moral corruption were the objects of greatest warning. So the majority of Christians did not shun the culture of play, so the efforts of Christian writers to ban them so strictly were not very successful. After all, the strong rejection of the Roman culture by Christians is a reaction from the church that arose in the process of incorporating Christians into the Roman Empire's play culture.
