Abstract

According to Plato’s Phaedo, the life in Hades the philosopher’s soul lives is the supreme life which is allowed to human. Yet, the dialogue is silent of which kind of pleasure exists in this life. If this means that this life lacks any pleasure, one of the main arguments of this dialogue, i.e. the life in Hades is the supreme human life, is not persuasive neither to those who read this work nor to Socrates’ dramatic discussants. In this vein, in this paper, I investigate whether the life in Hades is pleasurable or not based on two obvious facts about Hades: (a) the philosopher’s soul, which is entirely free from the body, achieves the complete wisdom there and (b) Hades is beautiful. Yet, there is no way to justify that this life is continuously pleasant, which teaches that, in order to claim that the supreme human life is the life of doing philosophy, it is necessary to inquire into what pleasure is, how the pleasure of achieving knowledge occurs, and how one continuously enjoys the peculiar pleasure of doing philosophy after attaining every knowledge.
