Abstract
This study is aimed at examining the mediating impact of confidence in the police on the disorder fear of crime relationship. The relationship between perceived disorder and fear of crime is grounded on broken windows theory. Broken windows theory suggests that the impact of perceived disorder on fear of crime is not direct. Rather, disorder is hypothesized to signal a lack of social control, which sparks fear of crime. However, prior studies have focused on the direct relationship between perceived disorder and fear of crime. To fill this gap, using 2018 Korean Crime Victimization Survey, the current study explored whether confidence in the police as a measure of perceived formal social control mediates the relationship between social and physical disorder and fear of violent and property crime. The results found that the mediating effect of confidence in the police on the relationship between physical and social disorder and fear of violent and property crime are statistically significant. The findings not only confirm a proposition of broken windows theory but also the role of police in dealing with fear of crime caused by perceived disorder.
