초록

‘il y a SN qui/que...’

Abstract

This work aims to describe the uses of the impersonal form ‘il y a SN qui/que...’ in French. In this form, the part qui/que..., is most often analyzed as an ordinary relative, but sometimes as a "pseudo-relative", PR which exhibits properties different from those of a relative. We call the form ‘il y a SN PR’ ‘il y a cleft construction’ or ‘il y a CC’. It is often used to report an event typically in response to the question “What is going on?”: e. g. “Il y a le vase qui est cassé”. But it can also be used to provide a value to the variable expressed by PR: e.g. “(Who wants to go to the cinema?) - Il y a Beth qui veut y aller, il y a Jean-Marc, il y a moi. ” (the variable X, X wants to go to the cinema, a value = Beth). After reviewing some previous analyzes of il y a CC, we have argued that the two subgroups of il y a CC, SG1 and SG2, do not have the same syntactic structure, and that the difference between the two SGs resembles that which is observed between il y a existential sentences (PE) and il y a locative sentences (PL). For the SG1, il y a takes as its only complement a proposition composed of an SN and a PR, while for the SG2, il y a takes two complements: an SN and a PR. And il y a takes a single complement in PE, and two complements in PL. It therefore seems plausible to assume that the SG1 and the SG2 are in fact the expansion of the two sentence types, PE and PL, respectively. In this work, we also looked at how the il y a CC is translated into Korean. It has been shown that it can be expressed consistently, in Korean, as a single sentence with the subject marker “~ ka”, which marks the focus of the sentence as well.
