Abstract
Ataka is now one of the most extreme-right populist political parties in Central and Eastern Europe. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the emergence and rise of political extremism and populism in Bulgaria through Ataka. The nature of Bulgarian populism was examined by studying the background factors of Ataka's success, election results, policy programs and supporters' characteristics, and further analyzed the political results of Ataka' s rise. First, Ataka and other extremist populist parties are expanding their political influence by supporting or cooperating with the government. Second, the rapid growth of Ataka contributed to the prosperity of small national populism parties and the emergence of new extreme right parties. The number of seats in the right-wing populist parties in the parliament surged. Third, Ataka’s political success affected the radicalization of all right - wing parties. To win the election, it became routine to imitate the radical populist parties and the entire political spectrum was "transmitted". Fourth, Ataka does not abuse violence and incites racial followers to encourage anti-ethnic demonstrations and anti-gypsy violence in the streets. Fifth, there is a new populism phenomenon in the form of 'grassroots populism' in Bulgaria recently. The protests in the voluntary streets of citizens, not organized by political parties or civic groups, are criticizing and challenging the existing political parties and democracy. In Bulgaria, the challenge of democracy by extreme political forces and extreme populism is expected to continue as long as there are two constants in society. The first is the poverty that continues under the tightening economy. While public complaints against the government have been peaking for the past 10 years, social structural problems such as high corruption, cannibalism and organized crime are still hampering economic growth. The second is radical racism and exclusive nationalism over ethnic minorities rooted in the people. Moreover, the issue of accepting Syrian refugees under the EU's quota policy and Turkey's accession to the EU will continue to be important issues in the future of Bulgarian politics.
