Abstract

This study raises a fundamental question about the nature of European Union, what is the European Union and explores the nature of the crisis in European integration from a theoretical framework of three ideal types of social orders such as market, community, and the state. This study argues that the current crisis in European Union is a crisis caused by the unsustainability in the depolitization strategy of European integration that has aimed to pursue the vision of functional cosmopolitanism to integrate the market and community without the state at the supranational level. This argument is supported by the analysis of three meanings of free movement in European Union when we conceive it from the perspective of three ideal types of social orders. This study concludes that European Union should search for a new integration strategy which can harmonize between the European single market and national political integration in member states of European Union in order to preserve at least the achievements of European economic integration.
