Abstract

This study is motivated by an academic interest in the 2024 UK election and whether shifts in UK voter support will lead to changes in the UK political system. I analysed 21 UK House of Commons elections from 1950 to 2024. The results obtained by the two major parties, including the Labor Party and the Conservative Party, were analyzed from various angles and aspects. The empirical data confirms the weakening of the classical two-party system. However, despite the weakening of the two-partism, I believe that the Westminster system will remain in various ways, including the alternating predominance. In the history of British politics, the stability and accountability of single-party governments have been seen as relatively superior to the coalition cabinet. In this respect, it is unlikely that the British public's desire for stability will be easily shaken. In addition, there is not much incentive to break consensus of the two largest parties in favour of the status quo, given the path dependence of the system itself. Therefore, it remains to be seen how much strength the discussion on institutional reform will proceed.
