18세기 후반 서간 소설에 그려진 감정의 양상과 그 의미 – 루소, 라클로, 사드를 중심으로

이 글에서 우리는 ‘감정’의 문제를 심각하게 다뤘던 루소, 라클로 그리고 사드의 작품을 중심으로 당시에 논의된 감정에 대한 여러 측면을 고찰하고자 했다. 세 작가의 작품들, 즉 『누벨 엘로이즈』, 『위험한 관계』 그리고 『알린느와 발쿠르』 등을 연구의 대상으로 삼은 것은 다음 두 가지 이유에서다. 먼저 내용의 측면에서 세 작품 모두 각각 “애정 소설”, “리베르탱 소설” 그리고 “피카레스크 소설 또는 철학 소설” 등으로 알려져 있지만 작품의 중심에는 ‘감정’의 주제가 깊이 뿌리박고 있다는 점이 있다. 분석대상인 세 작품 모두 다음성 서간소설의 문학형식을 취하고 있는 점도 매우 흥미롭다. 서간소설은 등장인물에 따라 다양한 양태로 나타나는 감정, 더구나 시시각각으로 오묘하게 변모하는 감정을 가장 훌륭하게 재현하는 장르이기 때문이다. 내용과 형식의 측면에서 세 작품을 비교·분석하는 일은 다음 두 가지 측면에서 매우 의미있는 작업이 된다. 즉 한편으로는 18세기 후반, 수십 년간에 걸쳐 세 소설가가 ‘감정’의 문제를 왜 그토록 심각하게 검토했는지 밝혀줄 수 있기 때문이다. 또 한편으로는 윌리엄 레디나 소피 봐니의 연구에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 대혁명의 소용돌이 속에서 혁명정부가 새로운 정치체제를 이룩하려고 공동체적 ‘감정’, 즉 사랑, 연민, 박애, 인민 등과 같은 추상적 개념을 도입했다고 가정한다면 세 작가가 집착하여 다룬 감정의 문제가 혁명기의 감정에 대한 논의와도 관련성이 있을 것이기 때문이다.
Abstract
In this article, we have tried to consider the matter of ‘emotion’ in various aspects by focusing on the works of Rousseau, Laclos, and Sade, who have dealt with the problems of ‘emotion’ seriously at that time. There are two following reasons why we have chosen those three authors’ works 『La Nouvelle Heloise』, 『Les Liaisons dangereuses』 and 『Aline and Valcour』 as the subject of study. First, the subject of ‘emotion’ is deeply rooted in all three of the works, even though they are considered as ‘love novel’, ‘libertin novel’ and ‘picaresque novel or philosophical novel’ when we look at the content. It is also very fascinating that all three works that are to be analyzed, take the literary form of polyphony epistolary novels. Epistolary novels are the genre that best depicts the emotions depending on the characters’ variation of emotions moment to moment. Procedure of comparing and analyzing the three works in terms of content is very meaningful due to the following two aspects. This is because, first, we can tell why those three authors have dealt seriously with the subject of ‘emotion’ over several decades at the late 18th century. On the other hand, as you can see in the research of William Reddy or Sophie Wahnich. When we assume that the revolutionary government have tried to establish a new political system by applying abstract matters of communal ‘emotions’ including love, compassion, fraternity, the public and etc., in the whirling vortex of the great revolution, there is a possibility that discussion of the feelings of the revolutionary period is relevant to the problems of emotions that the three writers were obsessed with.
