Abstract
The theory that British colonialism contributed to the development of democracy in former colonies after their independence has been debated for many years, yet academic consensus is still lacking. Recently, micro-level theories are employed to verify the relationship between the two, with particular attention to the argument that the British decolonization was more peaceful and progressive compared to other colonizers. This article argues that such ‘decolonization’ theories are still insufficient to overcome the limitations and errors of existing theories. Since the decolonization theory lacks rigorous intrinsic mechanisms that distinguish it from existing theories, thus failing to differentiate itself. Finally, I suggest the necessity to adopt the discipline and methodologies used in institutional analysis.
