본 연구에서는 우리나라 수출의 결제통화(invoice currency) 사용과 관련된 몇 가지 특징을 간단한 모형을 이용하여 분석하였고 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 우리나라 수출의 80% 정도가 달러화로 결제되는 등 달러화의 비중이 높은 것은 달러화가 널리 통용되는 국제통화라는 이유도 있지만 원/달러 환율의 변동성이 여타 환율에 비해 가장 낮기 때문인 것으로 분석된다. 둘째, 일본과 유로지역에 대한 수출에서 엔화 및 유로화의 결제비중이 높아지고 있는 것은 이들 통화가 국제통화로 부상하고 있고 이들 지역에서 PTM(pricing to market, 시장중시 가격설정)이 심화되고 있으며 자본재의 수입을 이들 국가에 크게 의존하고 있기 때문으로 보인다. 셋째, 원화와 동남아국가통화간 환율 변동성이 원/달러 환율 변동성에 비해 크지 않는 것은 이들 국가의 환율정책이 우리나라와 유사하기 때문인 것으로 추측된다. 넷째, 외환위기 이후 원/달러 환율과 원/선진국통화 환율간 변동성 격차가 줄어들고 있고 세계적으로 가격경쟁이 심화됨에 따라 달러화의 결제비중이 낮아질 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 결과가 시사하는 바는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 결제통화로서 달러화의 비중 축소는 환위험을 높임으로써 수출기반이 취약한 우리 수출에 부담이 될 수도 있다. 따라서 수출 경쟁력을 높이기 위한 제반 노력이 필요하며 달러화 중심의 환율정책도 재고되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 환위험과 수출에 대한 환율충격을 완화시키기 위해 동남아지역 수출의 경우 원화의 결제비중을 높여야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Korea has a couple of interesting characteristics related to invoicing practices of its exports. First, about 80 per cent of the exports are denominated in U.S. dollars (henceforth dollar), while it has decreased since 1990. Second, as for exports to Japan and EU, the share of the exports invoiced in yen and euro, respectively, has increased recently. The purpose of this paper is to find some theoretical explanations for them. The dominance of the dollar as an invoice currency is explained by inertia effects of the role of the dollar, the relative stability of the bilateral exchange rate between won and dollar, and the positive relationship between won/dollar exchange rate and marginal costs. The weakening dominance of the dollar results from the fact that the differences between volatility of the won/dollar exchange rate and volatilities of the won/export destination currencies have reduced. In addition, it is pricing to market behavior why more exports are denominated in yen and euro. By the way, as the bilateral exchange rate between won and dollar and the bilateral exchange rates between won and currencies of East Asian countries show the same volatility, it is rational for Korean exports to them to be invoiced in won.
