“相當”形容詞性、及物動詞性新探
A Study on the Dual Classification as an Adjective and Transitive Verb about the Term “Xiangdang”

One of the most popular dictionaries among the Chinese is the 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》 dictionary. It says that “Xiangdang” is classified as a verb which means “about the same”. But I don’t entirely agree with the definition of the term “Xiangdang”. According to 《Xiandai Hanyu Cidian》, in the sentence of as “年紀相當”, “欄河大壩高達一百一十米, 相當於二十八層的大樓”, “Xiangdang” functions a verb, but I argue that it does not have any action or behavior in meaning, so it can’t be a verb. It should be an adjective. In Modern Chinese， when intransitive verbs or adjectives are followed by “Yu”, the structure of “intransitive verbs/adjectives + Yu” has the function of a transitive verb. The “Xiangdang + Yu”, which we mentioned above, consists of the structure “adjectives + Yu”. But we also need to pay attention to the omission of “Yu” in “Xiangdang + Yu”. When “Yu” is omitted, “Xiangdang” can precede the object. This means that “Xiangdang” is changes into transitive verb. The result of my study on the purported verb “Xiangdang” is summarized as follows: 「相當 xiāngdāng 形容詞 1(數量、價值、條件、情形等)兩方面差不多; 旗鼓～￨年紀～￨攔河大壩高達一百一十米，～於二十八層的大樓。2適宜；合適：這個工作還沒有找到～的人|他一時想不出～的字眼來。及物動詞 和/同/與……在(數量、價值、條件、情形等)方面差不多: 他的文化水平∼大學本科。∕那個國家的面積不大，∼我國的一個中等省份。」
Abstract
