This paper reports on a study of the pragmatic functions of ‘(一)個’ in the ‘是(一)個NP’ construction. It argues that the motivation for the use of ‘(一)個’ can be neither syntactic nor semantic but pragmatic. It foregrounds the NP to indicate their discourse salience and to highlight the subjective stance of the speaker and also the discourse relevance in the current context the both of the speaker and the listener share.
Abstract
